Majority of
the 6983 graduates of Kyambogo University’s ninth graduation are uncertain of
where they are going to earn a living. As the guest of honour, Hon Jessica
Alupo delivered her speech; they chanted ‘give us jobs’ showcasing their fears.
“I hope to
get a job early next year because I don’t want to sit home with my first
class,” Teddy Nanteza who graduated with a first class honours degree in
Economics and Statistics said.
Moses Okoth wants
to establish himself as an academician but is uncertain of which institution to
work in. He says the employment system is crippled by attaining jobs by
‘technical know who’ instead of meritorious recruitment. He graduated with a first
class honours degree in Micro finance.
However despite the uncertainty of employment
after university education, the university continues to attract over 30,000
applications against only 7000 positions offered in the 111 programmes.
“The
opportunity to increase admissions is premised on expanded facilities and
increased funding,” Prof John Asibo Opuda, Ag Vice Chancellor said during the
ceremony.
Of the
graduates, 13 obtained PhD degrees bringing the number of PhDs degree holders
to 40 since 2008. There were 28 masters’ candidates, 52 post graduate diplomas
and six pioneer Master of Science in Physics graduates.
Meanwhile, Government
in partnership with the African Development Bank have put in place a $28m project
to help in the construction of a 7000-seater library, modern laboratories, ICT
infrastructure and further technical teacher education development.
